KS2 Reading Books: Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White (2003)

E.B. White, one of the most distinguished American writers

E.B. White is one of the most distinguished American writers of the present era. He is mostly famous for his renowned children’s classics like ‘Charlotte’s Web’, ‘Stuart Little’ and ‘The Trumpet of the Swan’ to name some of them.

In a survey of School Library Journal readers in 2012, ‘Charlotte’s Web’ was voted as the top children’s novel. In recognition to his substantial and lasting contribution to the children’s literature, E.B. White received the prestigious ‘Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal’ in 1970, in addition to many other awards.

Charlotte’s Web’s book

Charlotte’s Web was first published in 1952. So far, this book has been translated in 23 languages, and more than 45 million copies of this book have been sold around the world. In this classic children’s story, the author beautifully depicts the tale of how a little girl, named Fern, saved her adorable little pig Wilbur with the help of a friendly spider, Charlotte.

When Wilbur is in serious trouble of being slaughtered by the farmers, the spider Charlotte writes messages eulogizing Wilbur (such as “Some Pig”) using her web with a view to persuading the farmers to let him alive. This is a magnificent story of true friendship, commitment, and compassion, which you and your child will definitely be delighted about.

Charlotte’s Web is one of the most well-crafted stories ever written. The-easy-to-understand language is a prime facet of this award-winning book, which is perfectly suitable to children. If you are looking for the best gift for your kids, then you can choose this book without any hesitation. Then, as a bedtime story, this book can be absolutely ideal, as your child will simply love to hear the astonishing story of the little girl ‘Fern’, the intelligent spider ‘Charlotte’, and the affectionate pig ‘Wilbur’. The amazing illustrations by Garth Williams will also help them to remember the story for quite a long time. In Charlotte’s Web, E. B. White shows a great sense of humour that you will love and you will find the book to be a true source of entertainment.  Your son or daughter will also be able to learn the value of friendship, and will surely apply these teachings in their own life. I was personally fascinated by the overwhelming amount of loyalty and self-sacrifice shown by the characters featured in Charlotte’s web. I found it to be an incredible, life-formative book.

One memorable quote that I find truly amazing is this one:

 “Wilbur never forgot Charlotte. Although he loved her children and grandchildren dearly, none of the new spiders ever quite took her place in his heart. She was in a class by herself. It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.”

If you want to instil good qualities in your child’s character in addition to making them happy, this book will be your match. In addition to this, as an adult, you will equally like to read Charlotte’s web, because of the eloquent writing style of E. B. White, which is enough to keep you captivated for days. These characteristics have turned this book into a real classic.
